From the Chairperson’s desk
Dear Friends,
I am so excited to once again share with you the another month of Jewish student news from around the world. Much has happened in the past month, university has started in Europe and Israel, the three week period of back to back eating (aka the Jewish holiday season) has ended and registration for WUJS Congress has finally launched.
At the same time we can not ignore the latest spate of anti-Semitic incidents that have occurred on university campuses in the last month. Swastikas painted on a Jewish fraternity house in the United States and even a pig-head placed in the kosher section in a South African supermarket by the Congress of South Africa student. These events serve as constant reminders to why our global movement is so vital, Jewish students, no matter where we are must stand together.
On the bright side, we are happy to announce a new initiative, the WUJS Awards. These awards will honour those who have made outstanding contributions to Jewish student life. Awards will be given to individuals and student unions. You are all welcome to nominate individuals and member unions to receive these award by following this link.
All the best,
Andi

Union of Jewish Students of the UK & Ireland (UJS)
October at UJS has been a pretty hectic month. The month began with the tail-end of the British „Freshers” season. „Freshers” is the name given to the first week of the academic year in UK universities. Since not every university starts at the same time though and because UJS staff visit every Jewish Students Society (J-Soc) around the country during their respective first weeks #64daysoffreshers was born.
They also held their first careers event of the year, Succah in the City, which saw over 50 students come together to hear from, and network with, a panel of highly successful Jewish lawyers. A reception was also held at the UJS officeto dedicate their meeting room to Alan Senitt. Alan was UJS Chairperson 2001-2003, an inspirational leader to UJS and many other Jewish organisations, who was tragically murdered in 2006.
Finally, UJS hosted over 150 students in London for Shabbat UK (the UK name for the global Shabbos Project) with J-Socs around the countries getting involved and running cross-communal events throughout Shabbat on their campuses.
