King Cyrus of Persia let the Jews return to Jerusalem after 70 years of captivity and they rebuilt the Temple c.516 B.C. Around 330 B.C., Alexander the Great conquered the area, but upon his death, his general Seleucus I Nicator ruled. It became called the Seleucid Empire.
